We all have a scar somewhere in our body that we want to be notice us as little as possible. There are many creams and treatments, but how to know which are the most effective?
Types of scars on the skin
There are four types, which are classified according to their appearance and biological response:
- Atrophic : They are deep and occur when there has been a loss of tissue in place. They are marks that were produced by a deficient level of collagen. They are round like those of chicken pox. Example: acne product.
- Keloids: are very high and have been described as a tumor of collagen fibers. Its appearance is reddish and thick.
- Hypertrophic: they are elevated, of firm consistency and hypervascularized, which gives them a redder appearance. They are like keloids, but they are characterized by being smaller and more bulky.
- Contractures : in this case, the union of the edges of the skin is presented leaving it with a taut appearance.
Treatments
It is unlikely that a scar can be completely erased, but most of them can be greatly attenuated.
When attenuating a scar, both the type of skin and the part of the body in which it is found influence: Areas of the body that are usually covered are easier to perform treatments, since they are not exposed to light. Also, the whiter the skin is, the easier it is to attenuate the scar.
The main treatments are the following:
- Corticosteroids: is the most used intralesional injection. A monthly infiltration is recommended.
- Laser: is used for more than 25 years in the prevention and treatment of recent and old scars. The lasers used can be ablative (produce tissue vaporization) or non-ablative (coagulation). Very little can be noticed
- Surgeries: scar tissue is removed and the skin edges are joined in a much more detailed way . Wide scars can be almost eliminated and resutured, resulting in a much narrower and less noticeable scar.
- Cryotherapy: normally the agent used is liquid nitrogen, which is a gas that is at minus 195 degrees, that produces a remodeling of the scar.
- Silicone: is found in gel and plates. It should be applied between 12 and 18 hours a day, for a period of 1 to 2 months.
