This is the slogan with which the WASM (World Association of Sleep Medicine) makes a call to the community in general about the importance of sleep in our lives. It must be remembered that this Friday, March 13 is World Sleep Day.
"We spend almost a third of our lives sleeping, but little importance we give, in general, both the need to sleep, and the quality of our dream and what happens with our organism while we sleep ", says Dr. Evelyn Benavides, Neurologist, Sub-Specialist in Sleep Medicine, University Clinic of the Andes.
The WASM proposes that deep sleep is a basic function of the organism and that, together with a balanced diet and adequate exercise, is one of the pillars of health. When sleep fails, health declines. Lack of sleep and poor health diminish the quality of life and distance the individual from his or her chance to be happy.
"Most sleep disorders are preventable or treatable, however, less than a third of the sick seek professional help. Sleep problems constitute a global epidemic that threatens the health and quality of life of up to 45% of the world's population. A better understanding of the physiology of sleep and more research in this area of medicine will help reduce the burden of their disorders in society, "says Dr. Benavides.
The three basic elements for a dream of good quality are:
- His duration which should be enough to be rested and alert the next day.
- His continuity since a restful sleep is that without interruptions.
- Su depth, because the dream must be deep enough to allow a true recovery to the organism, thus granting a lucid and energetic awakening.
Sleep disorders are a factor of risk for mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. In addition, they increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and traffic accidents.
In turn, the control of these disorders improves the quality of sleep. For all the above, it is essential to treat sleep disorders in a timely manner.
