How can I prevent and calm back pain?

Back pain can originate due to different causes. There are several risk factors that make some people more prone than others to back pain. These include age, genetics, occupational hazards, weight, posture, pregnancy or smoking.

Likewise, work overload, hectic life of our days, tensions over our skeletal muscle system by sports and other activities under stress are conditions that often cause back pain.

Pain is the signal emitted by your body that something is not right. Pain is a very important indicator of your health and should be taken seriously.

Can back pain be prevented?

The best preventive measures against back pain are:

  • Exercise regularly to strengthen the muscles of the back.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. To maintain strong bones, you need to get enough calcium and vitamin D every day.
  • Maintain good posture by standing straight and avoid lifting heavy objects as much as possible. If you have to lift something heavy, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
  • It is important, although it is difficult, to lead a quiet life, not to self-demand so much.

When should I visit the doctor?

You must visit to the doctor if you feel:

  • Numbness or tingling
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by rest
  • Pain after a fall or injury
  • Pain accompanied by one of the following problems:
    • Difficulty urinating
    • Weakness
    • Numbness of legs
    • Fever
    • Weight loss without dieting

Conditions causing back pain

Some of the ailments whose symptoms include pain or discomfort on the back are:

Disc herniation.

Occurs when all or part of a disc of the spine is forced to pass through a weakened part of the disc. This can put pressure on nearby nerves or the spinal cord.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis .

The lumbar spinal canal is the space within the lower part of the spinal column that carries the nerves towards the legs. It is very narrow. Over the years, the bones and tissues around the canal grow, making the canal even narrower over time. This narrowing is called "stenosis." As the lumbar spinal canal narrows, the nerves that pass through it become squeezed. This pressure can cause back pain, pain in the legs and weakness.

Arthritis, falls, accidents and wear of the bones and joints of the spine can also cause stenosis of the lumbar spinal canal

] Spondylolisthesis .

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a bone (vertebra) in the spine moves forward away from the proper position on the bone beneath it.

]Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It causes pain, inflammation and decreased movements in the joints. It can occur in any joint but usually affects the hands, knees, hips or spine.
